According to research findings, joining the efforts of medicine and psychology results in the expedited recovery of patient and improves quality of life. The contribution of psychology to medicine also facilitates physicians' efforts by addressing problems that interfere with optimal medical outcome. As a result, in many Western countries, psychologists staff medical settings, participate in multidisciplinary teams, and are actively involved in the process of medical diagnosis and treatment.
Patients who are most appropriate for referral are those with:
- Neurological disorders or deficits as they will benefit from comprehensive neuropsychological services

- Emotional responses during their visit (e.g. crying)
- A recent diagnosis of a chronic or terminal illness
- Difficulty adjusting and accepting health problems
- Poor medical adherence
