"Psychotherapy may not educate as well as schools;
it may not produce goods and services as well as management science;
it may not cure illnesses as well as medicine;
but it reaches a part of life that nothing else touches as well."
(Smith et al., 1980; Quoted in Gross, 1992)

Information on Psychotherapy
Differences between Psychotherapy and Daily Social Interactions
Psychotherapy differs from non-clinical, social interaction in six ways:
i. Confidentiality (for detailed information on confidentiality visit "Frequently Asked Questions")
ii. Application of theories and techniques for initiating change in thought, emotions, and behavior, which are presented in the literature as empirically supported treatments
iii. Definition of goals, which are not limited to "getting problems off our chest", but comprise specific goals for change. Goals are set in the first session by the collaborative effort of the psychologist and the client. Achievement of these goals is also associated with the end of the psychotherapeutic process.
iv. The relationship of the therapist and the client, that is strictly professional and is not subject to social rules, etiquette, or any form of exploitation
v. Focus on the client, as the session time is completely devoted to his or her needs.
vi. The qualifications of the psychotherapist, which should include sufficient clinical experience, a solid background in at least one theoretical approach to psychotherapy and several empirically supported treatments, and familiarization with the international scientific literature.
